When is National Pancake Day?
There is some confusion about when National Pancake Day is because there are two annual events when it is celebrated.
September 26 is LumberJack Day and the associated National Pancake Day. So this is the day to put on your red-checked flannel shirt, roll-up your sleeves, and chop down a tall stack of Barred Woods Pancakes drowning in maple syrup. This date appears to have no religious or historical basis.
Shrove Tuesday (aka Pancake Day) is a traditional Christian holiday the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. This date varies each year and is 47 days before Easter, which is based on the cycles of the moon. Here is a link to the dates for the rest of this century. Lent is traditionally a time of sacrificing. The old tradition of pancake breakfasts during Shrovetide comes from the practice of using up your supply of surplus rich ingredients like eggs, milk and butter that you had in your pantry prior to Lent.
International House of Pancakes -IHOP - Offers free pancakes one day a year, usually coinciding with Shrove Tuesday. The Day varies each year and for 2025 it is on Tuesday March 4, 2025.
